Sanchez calls snap general election
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has called an early general election for the 29th of November.
The announcement follows last Friday’s defeat in Congress of two Government housing decrees, and comes after a weekend of talks with ministers and senior PSOE figures.
Sánchez said voters should now decide the country’s future, arguing that a stronger progressive majority would allow Parliament to tackle issues including housing.
The decision brings forward the election by several months. The Government had originally been expected to remain in office until next year, but its increasingly fragile parliamentary majority has made it difficult to pass key legislation.
The People’s Party and Vox helped defeat the housing measures, alongside Junts and other opposition parties.
The election campaign will now begin in November, with voters going to the polls on Sunday the 29th.
