EU Leaders Ink Migration and Energy Deals in Mauritania Amid Surge in People-Smuggling

In a significant move to tackle migration challenges and energy security, EU leaders Ursula von der Leyen and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez have embarked on a strategic trip to Mauritania.

The visit aims at forging critical agreements on migration and energy, amidst a backdrop of escalating people-smuggling incidents targeting the Canary Islands.

Frontex’s impending data is anticipated to reveal a dramatic surge in individuals risking the journey from West African coasts to the Spanish territories.

The EU aims to discuss pivotal subjects such as security, migration, and stability in the Sahel region with Mauritania’s President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani.

This initiative is part of a broader EU strategy to manage migration flows and foster legal pathways for migrants, against the spectre of rising irregular border crossings and the approaching European Parliament elections.

In addition, the visit includes discussions on deploying renewable energy resources, highlighting the EU’s commitment to sustainable development and strategic international partnerships.
