Earthquake in Morocco felt in Spain and Portugal with no damage reported

Tremors from the powerful earthquake in Morocco that caused over two thousand deaths have been felt in parts of Spain.

Whilst minor tremors were reported on the Iberian peninsular no damage has been reported.

In Andalucía, emergency services received more than twenty calls during the immediate aftermath of the quake. In an update yesterday, Foreign Office officials confirmed that there are no known Spanish fatalities or injuries as a result of the six point eight magnitude quake.

On Saturday night Morocco officially requested assistance, with the Spanish Government sending a plane with fifty-six members of the UME to Marrakech to help in the search for survivors.

The Spanish embassy in Morocco has also set up an emergency consular phone line for assistance, and the Spanish government has offered further aid to Moroccan authorities for rescue and reconstruction efforts.

Meanwhile the government said it is coordinating with airlines to help repatriate Spanish citizens and the Instituto Cervantes in Marrakech is open to provide accommodation.
