Government to relax mask wearing rules this week

Minister of Health – Carolina Darias – has confirmed that the Spanish Government is to lift the nationwide requirement for the wearing of face masks outdoors from Thursday.

The measure will be part of a wider rollback of restrictions, as the latest wave of the pandemic starts to show signs of receeding.

Mask wearing outdoors was reinstated in late December to curb the spread of the emergent Omicron variant of the coronavirus.

Cabinet will meet tomorrow to rubberstamp the changes to the regulation, which will come into effect on Thursday.

In the past two weeks, the incidence rate for Covid-19 has been steadily falling to 2,421 cases per 100,000 people yesterday, down from almost 3,400 in early January.
