Rajoy warns that Catalonia cannot be governed by Skype
Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has issued a warning to Carles Puigdemont, that he will extend the period of direct rule across the Catalonian region if he tries to be sworn in as regional president in absence.
The former leader is currently on a self-imposed exile in Brussels. There was suggestions that Mr Puigdemont would try to lead remotely, whist an arrest warrant is open in the country for his part in the unilateral declaration of independence last October following the contested independence referendum.
The Catalan government elections resulted in a narrow coalition government being formed of pro-separatist parties, however no one party holds the majority in the Catalan regional parliament. Pro-union party Ciudadanos gained the largest share of the vote.
