Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and the head of the regional government of Catalonia, Quim Torra, have pledged fresh dialogue to try to resolve their dispute over the region’s status within Spain.
The vow came after talks in Barcelona between the pair amid simmering tensions in the wake of Catalonia’s failed bid to break away from Spain last year.
It was the first meeting between the two since Madrid talks in July a month after Sanchez came to power.
Sanchez will hold a meeting of his cabinet in Barcelona today, a year to the day since the snap regional elections, an action which has angered many separatists. Thousands of police have been deployed to prevent protests turning violent.
