Former prime minister Mariano Rajoy has announced that he is to step down from leading the conservative Partido Popular.
The former premier annouced that he will pass over leadership of the party to it’s new leader at the next party congress, which is due in the coming months.
In a statement, that at some points saw the head of the party moved to tears, he launched a scathing attack at the PSOE leader and prime minister Pedro Sanchez who led the censure motion against him last week.
At present, no names have been suggested for a successor.
