Olive farmers in Madrid have voiced concerns, after the first case of ‘Xylella fastidiosa’ was discovered in the region.
The bacterial infection – that has killed millions of trees in Italy and across parts of Spain – was detected in a farm in Villarejo de Salvanés.
Measures will now be taken to prevent the further spread of the disease, including destroying nearby trees and vineyards and treatments for trees within 500 metres of the infected tree.
