The Spanish King and Queen – Europe’s newest monarch – will be formally welcomed by Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip – Europe’s longest reigning monarch – in Buckingham Palace today.
This is the fourth time a Spanish monarch has officially visited the United Kingdom. The first one was Philip II in the 16th century, then Alfonso XIII in 1905, and finally Juan Carlos I in 1986.
On the agenda for the two day visit will be meetings with PM Theresa May, tea with Prince Charles and the Dutchess of Cornwall, an address in the Houses of Parliament, a full state banquet, as well as official visits to Spanish businesses that have bases and operations in the UK.
