One of the boats that was involved in a collison on Monday that killed a nine-year-old boy is understood to have been involved in the drug trafficing trade, according to local Polica Nacional.
The boat, understood to be a semi-rigid speed boat, is believed to have been involved in the supply of fuel to so called Narcolanchas – speed boats that cross the Mediteeranian between Spain and northern Africa transporting illegal drugs.
The pilot of the boat which collided with a small pleasure craft, killing the child and injuring the child’s father, has been arrested and is known to be operating illegal drug transfers. It’s believed the incident happened after the father complained to the other boat pilot about their seamanship.
Interior Minister Juan Ignacio Zoido confirmed that none of the two boats related to the incident had been directly involved in the supply of drugs. He also revealed that one of those detained had a criminal record for drug trafficking.
The incident has risen tensions over the increase in illegal drug trafficking that is happening in Algeciras. The victim was laid to rest yesterday afternoon.
