Sections of the British tabloid press have been criticized for reports regarding a possible eruption of Mount Teide in Tenerife.
The Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands, Involcan, issued a statement last week (PDF) saying there is no risk at present of any form of mega-eruption, and that the minor cluster of tremors reported on the sea bed between Tenerife and Gran Canaria are normal.
Stories that have been called alarmist were published in UK newspapers including the Daily Express, the Daily Mail and The Sun.
The islands are currently on a green status, meaning an eruption is not expected anytime soon. The last time Mount Teide erupted was in 1909.
